What is PESS in Sport Performance and Athletic Development

Power is the ability to exert a maximal force in as short a time as possible, as in accelerating, jumping and throwing implements. While strength is the maximal force you can apply against a load, power is proportional to the speed at which you can apply this maximal force.

Endurance is the ability to repeat a series of muscle contractions without fatiguing. Muscle endurance is different from cardiovascular endurance because it involves the muscle fatiguing rather than a limitation in the amount of oxygen being supplied or utilized by the muscles.

Speed is not just how fast someone can run (or cycle, swim etc.), but is dependent on their acceleration (how quickly they can accelerate from a stationary position), maximal speed of movement, and also speed maintenance (minimizing deceleration).

Strength (Explosive)

Explosive Strength refers to the ability to exert strength or force as rapidly as possible in a given action. Explosive Strength is dependent on Rate of Force Development (RFD), which simply stated means the speed at which force can be produced.
